Protection for you

It makes financial sense to think about what would happen if you suffered a critical illness, such as cancer, heart attack or a major organ transplant, or had an accident that stopped you working for a while.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) figures for 2014 show that insurers pay out on average £9.4m every day to help more than 350 families cope with the financial difficulties that can result from a life changing event – allowing people to focus on other challenges.

One of the myths is that protection insurance does not pay out when you make a claim. This is why each year the ABI publishes claim rates for protection insurance. In fact in 2014 97.7% of all protection insurance claims were paid (excluding group income protection) helping hundreds of thousands of families with a financial boost at a difficult time.

But protection insurance does not just offer financial help when you make a claim, it can also provide additional services and support. Income protection, for example, supports people with their return to work after an illness or injury, through rehabilitation and back to work support services.

The average pay-out in 2014 on a critical illness (CI) insurance policy was £67,000.  Total Permanent Disability claims averaged £73,200

The average claim paid in 2014 for individual income protection (IP) policies was just over £10,000, paying out on average for 204 weeks (nearly four years), worth £39,200, to help those unable to work.

Note: Claims paid includes those that were in payment at the start of the year and new claims where a decision was made during the year. Group protection claims are excluded.

Individual Income Protection policies may pay out for a few months or for many years. This figure is an average of all new and on-going claims during 2014.
